Florida Science Olympiad 2020!

Happy September to everyone!

A big change this year is the location of our state tournament. This year the state tournament will be held at the University of Florida in Gainesville on March 21st, 2020. Your team wants to work hard and excel at their regional so they can attend this great tournament. Here are some other things that are changing his year:

  • Increased participation: We are inviting 48 teams in each division to come and compete and the state tournament – 6 more than in previous years!
  • Less work for you: All events will be written, reviewed, and run by experienced Science Olympiad alumni from UF and other universities across the country.
  • Quality Events: Our event supervisors will be among the best in the country, with many having national medals and experience running events at MIT, Princeton, Golden Gate, and even Nationals!
  • Fun Activities: In addition to Saturday’s tournament events, we will also be hosting campus tours and other activities on the Friday before the tournament to showcase our campus and what UF has to offer to the best and brightest in Florida.
  • Indoor Awards: We will be holding our awards ceremony in the Phillips Center. In addition to the individual and team medals, our UFSO team and our UF sponsors will be presenting some special prizes to event champions in select events.

I am excited about the changes (especially the indoor awards ceremony) and hope you are, too!

EVENT SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH DETECTOR BUILDING (DIV C)

Science Olympiad 2020 season welcomes a brand-new event that Florida ran as a trial last year: Detector Building.

The Detector Building event combines coding, engineering, math, and science into a working sensor that is calibrated and coded to collect data. The program students write will cause various LED’s to turn on or off based on the temperature readings. During the competition, students must adjust their code and calibration equation to match that of a store-bought digital thermometer closely.

While teams may use any microcontroller and device for coding, but Texas Instrument has a lot of tools if you want to use a TI Inspire calculator for the coding.

Go to https://resources.tistemprojects.com/tistemprojects-home/?resource_id=2793 for lots of resources from Texas Instrument.
